The following is a Micro Movie Review: short and to the point, only what parents need to know.
Tiana is a hardworking waitress in New Orleans, trying to raise money to open her own restaurant. When she meets Prince Naveen, who has been turned into a frog by the Shadow Man, she agrees to kiss him and return him to human form. But the magic of the kiss goes awry, and Tiana becomes a frog herself. Tiana and Prince Naveen embark on an adventure through the deep south to find a way to break the spell.
The Princess and the Frog is a brilliant continuation of classic Disney animation. The artwork is breathtaking and captivating. The voices and cajun accents are amazing, and the music will have you bouncing in your seat. The plot, however, is not as magical as some of the Disney greats. It moves slow at times, but I have no doubt it will become a classic on DVD.
The voodoo magic sequences in The Princess and the Frog can be frightening at times, but not any more than other Disney films. When there is an overall theme of goodness, paired with a happy ending, kids can usually handle a few scary parts. Kids long to see good triumph over evil, but they can't see that without seeing how evil a villain truly is. But, use your discretion. If your child has seen other Disney animated films without being too frightened, then they can probably handle this one.
Parents may have qualms with the "wish upon a star" theme. Almost every character wishes on the north star with a prayer-like fervor, and their wishes often come true. Tiana's mother supports her dream to open a restaurant, but really just wants her to find her "true love" and settle down, so she can have some grandchildren. There is a death in the film, followed by a touching funeral procession.
Disney keeps the jokes clean, as usual. There are a few low cut dresses, and one character adjusts her bra through her dress, but that's it.
OVERALL
A beautifully animated and clean film for the whole family. I know toddlers, teenagers, and adults who all enjoyed it.
